Valladolid, Mexico: Hidden Gems, Mayan Ruins, and Magical Experiences

Valladolid intro

Valladolid is called “Pubelo Magico” or “Magic Town”. It is undoubtedly one of the most authentic and charming places in Mexico. Explore this world of culture, natural beauty and meet the ever friendly locals.

Mayan Sites: Ek Balam

The Ek Balam ruins are one of the most stunning archeological sites in the Yucatan peninsula. They are one of the lesser visited Mayan sites as compared to the more popular Chichen Itza and therefore offer a somewhat quieter experience. The feeling of peace also comes from the lush jungles in which they are located.

Cenotes:

These are natural sinkholes or pits that are formed when limestone bedrock collapses, exposing groundwater. Cenotes are known for their deep fresh water and very unique ecosystems. In some cases, no one really knows how deep the cenote actually is! The ancient Maya used Cenotes for their water supply. A mature cenote will be fully open while a young cenote will have a narrow opening that opens over many years as the cenote matures.

Casa de los Venados:

This is a private home and museum known for its extensive collection of Mexican folk and contemporary art. It was founded by the Venators, an American couple who chose to retire there. The Venator family still lives and entertains visitors in the house when they visit Valladolid but began giving free personal tours of their collection. Throughout the tour, over 3,000 pieces of Mexican folk art from all over the country can be found in practically every corner and covering every wall.
